Our history
The very heart of Umbria, amidst the green, gently sloping green hills: this is the homeland of Fattoria di Monticello.
One of the most beautiful and uncontaminated places of Italy, where the rich and precious terroir, coupled with respect and love for nature, has always borne good fruits.
Fattoria di Monticello is the outcome of the will and the passion of the Scassini family, farmers and breeders in Umbria since 1948. Care for the environment, use of state-of-the-art cultivation techniques and continuing research: these are the key factors that allowed the family to develop an innate, focused bond with the environment and the nature surrounding us.
Thanks to plenty of effort, the farms cultivated areas and heads of livestock have increased over the years: vineyards, olive groves, primary crops (cereals) and cattle raising have always been its core assets, always characterised by respect for the peculiarities of the land and care for product quality. The farm size today is 470 hectares: a good sample of the territory of the green hills of Umbria and of its traditions.
The commitment towards the land and the people living there may be seen both in the old-fashioned and experienced labour of the farm workers, and in the use of cutting-edge methodologies that can assure full-flavoured quality to our products.
Our activities
Our passion drives everything we do. So we produce top-quality wine, olive oil, meat, cereals, pulses and food through our farming chain. The quality of our products is guaranteed by the dedication of those people who in their work pass down and maintain the identity of our traditions in all its liveliness. The respect for the nature and the environment is reflected in the principles of bio-sustainable farming, based on a careful use of the soil, on crop rotation and on organic fertilization. The respect for the animals wellbeing is also one of our key features: our animals feed mostly on cereals, forage and our own pastures. In order to complete and crown our efforts, we are renovating our old farm buildings so that we will be able to offer genuine hospitality, immersed in a natural setting and a natural everyday life.
Bio-sustainability
In accordance with our vision, focused on respect for and preservation of the territory, we have always tried hard to choose solutions that could preserve our setting as it is. Of course we maintain the fertility of our soil by using manure obtained from recycling the dung of our own cattle, or by growing crops such as broad beans (nitrogen fixative) that can enrich soils that would otherwise become depleted. We also employ crop rotation and promote traditional crops that run the risk of disappearing from memory because they are scarcely profitable, and yet they have the power to rebalance a complex and fragile ecosystem. Our bio-sustainable farming model, as mentioned earlier, is based on the protection of the territory and of its biodiversity: this is why as much as 130 hectares in the property of the Scassini family are woodland and pasture land, where wild animals and tree species have their home. Masterfully tended and exploited, these provide, among other things, woodchips of variable size used to produce pellet fuels, a renewable energy source par excellence. We maintain our green areas by mechanical spudding, cutting and reaping, without using weed-killers and desiccants massively.
What drives us along?
We believe that the true value of a business comes from its people, from their passion, from the set of skills they are able to convey to each other.
This is why respect, fairness and transparency come before anything else for us at Fattoria di Monticello. We believe this is the only way to build up relationships that will last over time. These values have always been guiding us, in all that we do.
Our terroir
When we think of terroir, apart from the mere physical space where a community builds its past, we refer to a combination of distinctive cultural features derived from knowledge, traditions and practices that are based on social interaction, and hence on values deeply rooted in our identity. Therefore, the know-how developed in the territories of origin is the added value that we convey and transmit through our products, closely tied to traditions and to the territory but always with an eye to the future.
